Carbon steel is a type of metal made of iron. It also contains a small amount of carbon. The amount of carbon changes how the steel works.

There are two main kinds of carbon steel. The first kind is low-carbon steel. It has very little carbon. This makes it easy to bend and shape. People use it for car parts, pipes, and nails. It is also cheap to make.

The second kind is high-carbon steel. This steel has more carbon. It is much harder and stronger. Because it is hard, it is used for tools like axes and chisels. It is also used to make springs. However, high-carbon steel is harder to weld. It can also be more brittle, which means it might break instead of bending.

We can change steel using heat treatment. This is a way to change the metal by heating it up and cooling it down. For example, heating steel and then cooling it fast in water makes it very hard.

Carbon steel can rust if it gets wet. We can use paint to protect it. This keeps the metal safe from damage.
