A forge is a special kind of hearth.

A smith uses it to heat metal. This makes the metal malleable. That means it is soft enough to shape.

To make a hot fire, smiths use fuel. They might use charcoal or coal. They also use a tuyere. This is a pipe that lets air into the fire. A bellows or a blower pushes air through the pipe. More air makes the fire burn much hotter.

Some smiths use a gas forge. These use propane or natural gas. They are very easy to use. They also make a clean fire.

Once the metal is hot, the smith moves it. They use tongs to hold the metal safely.

They place the metal on an anvil. An anvil is a heavy metal block. It acts like a workbench. Most anvils have a steel face. This face is very hard. It helps the hammer's power push back into the metal. This is called rebound.

After shaping the metal, the smith may use a slack tub. This is a large container of water. It cools the metal quickly. This helps to harden the steel.
