Blacksmiths use it to shape metal. They hit the metal with a hammer. The anvil must be very heavy. This mass helps move the hammer's power into the metal. Most modern anvils are made of cast steel. This is steel made by pouring liquid metal into a mold.

An anvil has many important parts. The flat top is called the face. It is made of hard steel. A smooth face prevents marks on the metal. One end has a pointy part called a horn. This horn helps bend metal into round shapes. There is also a square hole called a hardy hole. This hole holds special tools. Another small hole is the pritchel hole. It is used for punching holes in metal.

Anvils need a strong base. A smith might use a large wooden log. This keeps the anvil stable.

Some anvils are very large. One anvil made in 2023 weighs 1600 pounds. Other anvils are made of many pieces. One famous anvil weighs 6500 pounds.
