It is usually a large block made of steel. Blacksmiths use it to work on metal pieces. Anvils are built to be very massive. This weight is important for a special reason. The more mass an anvil has, the better it transfers energy. This happens when a hammer strikes a workpiece. The energy goes into the metal instead of the anvil moving.

An anvil has several specific parts for different jobs. The flat top surface is called the face. This face is made of hardened steel to stay smooth. A smooth face prevents marks on the metal being shaped. One end of the anvil has a conical part called a horn.

This horn helps a smith bend metal into round shapes. There is also a square hole known as a hardy hole. This hole holds specialized tools for cutting or forming. A small round hole called a pritchel hole is also common. It is mostly used for punching holes in metal.

Anvils have changed a lot throughout history.

The very first anvils were made of stone. Later, people made them out of bronze and wrought iron. As steel became easier to find, smiths used it for the face. This helped the anvil resist being dented by heavy blows. In the mid-19th century, the London pattern became very popular. Most anvils in the United States today are based on that design. By the 20th century, makers began producing solid cast-steel anvils.

There are many different sizes and types of anvils.

Most modern ones are made of cast steel. The largest single-piece tool steel anvil weighs 1600 pounds. This huge anvil was made in 2023 by Oak Lawn Blacksmith. Some anvils are even larger because they use multiple pieces. One anvil made by Napier weighs 6500 pounds. Anvils are also made in special styles for different workers. There are styles for farriers, armorers, and even saw makers. Some styles come from places like Bavaria, France, or China.

To work well, an anvil must be placed carefully.

It is usually kept near a forge. This helps the metal stay hot while it is being worked. Anvils need a very sturdy base to stay stable. Many smiths traditionally use a large hardwood log. Some use cast-iron bases or thick steel beams. Even modern smiths might use steel tripod bases. Anvils are still very important for blacksmiths today. They are also essential for farriers who work with horses.
