A power hammer is a machine used to shape metal.

Blacksmiths and metalworkers use it for forging. Forging is the way they shape hot metal. These tools are also called open die power forging hammers. They have been used since the late 1880s. They replaced older tools called trip hammers.

This tool works in a very specific way. It has a frame and an anvil. A part called a ram moves up and down. The ram holds a hammer head or a die. The metal piece sits on the lower anvil. Then the upper head strikes the metal.

A power hammer does more than just drop. It uses power to speed up the ram. This makes the strike much stronger than gravity alone.

Different hammers use different kinds of power. Steam hammers use steam to move the hammer. These are often the largest models. They need the great energy of steam. In some places, like locomotive works, these hammers were huge. Workers might use an overhead crane to move metal.

Other hammers use mechanical links. They might use electric motors or belts. These turn a crank to drive the ram.

History shows how these tools changed over time. Mechanical hammers became popular in small shops in the late 1800s. These smaller machines were often used by one person. In the middle of the 20th century, air power became popular. These use pneumatics, which means using compressed air. Many companies still make these air hammers today.

We can measure a hammer by its weight. This weight is the part that hits the metal. It includes the ram and the hammer head. It also includes the springs or the piston. Some very large steam hammers were rated at 250,000 pounds. This shows how much force they can make. You can still see these tools in artist shops today. They help people make beautiful metal shapes.
