Metalworking

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Metalworking is the way people shape and reshape metals. This work helps us create many useful things. We can make huge ships, bridges, and large buildings. We also make tiny engine parts and delicate jewelry.

Metalworking is both a science and a craft. It is a very important industry for the whole world. Without metal, goods and services could not move around the globe.

There are three main ways to work with metal. The first way is casting. This happens when you pour molten metal into a mold. The metal cools and takes the shape of that mold.

The second way is forming. This uses mechanical force to change a shape. Sometimes workers use heat to make the metal easier to move.

The third way is cutting. This involves removing material to make a specific part.

People have been working with metal for a very long time. The oldest evidence of copper working is a pendant from 8,700 BCE. This was found in northern Iraq. In the Americas, people worked copper near Lake Michigan around 4000 to 5000 BCE.

The oldest gold artifacts come from the Varna Necropolis in Bulgaria. These date back to 4450 BCE. Long ago, people learned to use smelting to get metal from ore. Smelting is using heat to take metal out of rocks.

Ancient people knew about seven different metals. These included iron, tin, lead, copper, mercury, silver, and gold. Gold is special because it is a native metal. This means it can be found in nature as pure nuggets.

Gold is very easy to work with using just a stone hammer. Other metals must be taken from ore, which is a mineral-bearing rock. Copper was very common, but it was often too soft for tools. People mixed copper with tin to create bronze. Bronze was much stiffer and lasted longer than pure copper.

Today, metalworking happens in places called machine shops. These shops have many specialized tools to make precise products. Workers often use calipers to measure things very carefully.

A caliper can measure the distance between two points very accurately. Some metalworking is done by hand, like blacksmithing. However, most large-scale work is now done with machines. This allows us to make the complex parts we use every day.
