Drawing (manufacturing)

Drawing is a special way to shape materials like metal, glass, or plastic.

It works by using pulling forces to make a material longer and thinner. This process is very important for making many things we use every day. There are two main ways it happens. One way is called sheet metal drawing. This uses a flat piece of metal called a blank. The metal moves to fit a specific shape. Another way is for making wires, bars, or tubes. In these cases, the material is pulled through a tool called a die. This die has a shaped hole that changes the material's size.

To make a wire or bar, the process follows specific steps.

First, the end of the material is made thin or pointed. This is called push pointing. It helps the tip fit through the small die opening. Next, a lubricant like oil or phosphate is coated on the surface. This helps the material slide through more easily. Then, a machine pulls the rest of the material through the die. This makes the piece longer and reduces its diameter. For complex shapes, the material might go through many dies in a row. This is called multi-pass drawing. Between these passes, the metal may undergo annealing, which is a heat treatment to soften it.

People have used these ideas for a long time.

In 1930, a man named Julian W. Hill discovered a way to draw plastics. He was trying to make fibers from an early type of polyester. This discovery helped us make plastic fibers. For metal, workers often use hot-rolled stock to start the cold drawing process. They might use a draw bench to pull straight bars. For shorter pieces, they can use hydraulic cylinders. To make the dies that pull the metal, they use tough materials. Common choices for making dies are tungsten carbide or even diamond.

There are many interesting facts about how much a material can change.

In many cases, the reduction in area is kept between 20% and 50%. If they try to reduce it more, the material might break. This depends on how much the material can stretch, which is called ductility. Sheet metal drawing becomes deep drawing if the piece is longer than its diameter. In sheet metal, workers must find a careful balance. Too much pressure makes the part too thin and causes it to break. Too little pressure or too much lubricant can cause wrinkles to form.

Drawing connects to many things you see around you.

It is used to make the flexible metal wires found in cables. It is also used to make glass optical fibers. Even the plastic in many clothes comes from this process. For example, nylon fibers are stretched to four times their original length. This makes the fibers strong and stiff. When metal is cold drawn, it gets a bright and polished finish. It also becomes stronger through a process called work hardening. This allows even inexpensive materials to be used for strong parts.
