Sheet metal is metal formed into thin, flat pieces.

These pieces are very important in our world. They can be flat sheets or long, coiled strips. To make a coil, a machine runs a continuous sheet through a roll slitter. The thickness of the metal changes depending on its use. Very thin sheets are called foil or leaf. If a piece is thicker than 6 mm, it is called plate.

Making these shapes involves several different ways it works. One way is called hot rolling or cold rolling. These processes use machines to flatten the metal. Another way is deep drawing, which stretches metal over a shape.

This method makes things like kitchen sinks or aluminum cans. Workers can also use bending to change the shape. They might also use curling to make edges safe and smooth. Sometimes, a layer of color is added to protect the metal.

People have used metal sheets for a very long time. In ancient times, people hand-hammered metal for buildings. Later, in the late 17th century, water-powered rolling mills were invented. These mills used large, rotating iron cylinders to press metal flat. In the United States, sheet metal became common in the 1870s. It was used for roofing and decorative ceilings. By the 1890s, it became very popular because it was cheap and fireproof.

Many different metals can become sheet metal. Steel is very common, including stainless steel. Grade 304 is a popular type because it resists rust well. Aluminum is also widely used because it is flexible and light. Grade 6061-T6 is a strong type used in modern aircraft. Other metals include copper, brass, tin, nickel, and titanium. Even precious metals like gold and silver are used for decoration. In the U.S., thickness is often measured by a gauge. A larger gauge number actually means the metal is thinner.

You can find sheet metal in many places every day. It is used to make bodies for cars and trucks. It also makes up the wings and bodies of airplanes. You might see it in your kitchen as a tin can. It is used for roofing on many buildings. In the past, it was even used for armor worn by cavalry. Today, it is still used for many tools and machines.
