Aluminium foil is a very thin sheet of metal.

It is very pliable, which means you can bend it easily. You can wrap it around many different objects. Some thin foils are quite fragile. To make them stronger, people sometimes laminate them. This means they attach them to paper or plastic. Most foil is used for packaging. About 75% of all foil wraps food, cosmetics, or chemicals. The other 25% is used for industrial jobs like making electrical cables.

There is a special way that machines make this metal.

Making the foil very thin is a hard job. To avoid tearing the metal, machines roll two sheets at the same time. This doubles the thickness when it enters the rollers. After the rolling is done, the two sheets are pulled apart. This process creates two different sides. One side looks shiny and the other side looks matte. The matte side was the part that touched the other sheet.

Before we had aluminium, people used tin foil.

Tin foil was sold in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It was not as easy to bend as aluminium. It could also give food a slight taste of tin. In 1910, the first rolling plant for aluminium foil opened. This plant was in Emmishofen, Switzerland. It was owned by a company called Neher. The company started in 1886 in Schaffhausen. They used energy from the Rhine Falls to power their work.

Many people use foil in their homes today.

In 1911, a company called Tobler began using it. They wrapped their chocolate bars in it. This included their famous triangular Toblerone bars. Standard household foil is usually a bit thicker. Heavy-duty foil is even thicker. Some foil even has a non-stick coating on one side. You must be careful with microwaves, though. The electric waves can cause sparks in the metal.

Aluminium foil has some very cool science properties.

It is a good conductor, which means electricity moves through it. It can also reflect almost all electric waves. This happens because it is a metal. You can even use it to clean other metals. If you put it in a baking soda solution, it can polish silver or gold. This works because aluminium is more reactive than those metals. Finally, foil is great for the Earth. You can recycle it using only 5% of the energy it took to make it.
