Duralumin is a very strong type of metal.

It is an alloy, which is a mix of different metals. This specific mix uses mostly aluminium. It also includes copper, magnesium, and manganese.

Adding copper makes the metal much harder. However, copper can cause corrosion, which is when metal breaks down. To fix this, makers use alclad. This is a thin layer of pure aluminium that protects the metal. This special material is still used in the aircraft industry today.

Making duralumin involves a special way it works called heat treatment. First, the metal goes through solution annealing. This means it is heated to high temperatures so the elements dissolve into the aluminium. Next comes quenching, which is cooling the metal very fast. This rapid cooling freezes the mixture in place. Finally, the metal undergoes aging, also called precipitation hardening. During aging, tiny bits called precipitates form inside the metal. These tiny bits act like obstacles to keep the metal from moving easily. This makes the final metal very hard and strong.

A scientist named Alfred Wilm discovered this in Germany. He worked at a private laboratory in Neubabelsberg. In 1903, he noticed something strange. He found that an aluminium alloy with 4% copper would harden if left at room temperature. This discovery led to the official creation of duralumin in 1909. The name comes from the German word "dur," meaning hard. A company called Dürener Metallwerke AG later bought his patents. They used the name as a trademark for their metal.

Many different types of these alloys exist today. They are part of the 2000 series in the international alloy system. For example, the 2024 alloy is very common. It is made of 91% to 95% aluminium. It also contains 3.8% to 4.9% copper.

Other parts include magnesium, manganese, and tiny amounts of iron or silicon. These specific mixes help engineers choose the right metal for a job. Some are made for heavy-duty parts, while others are made for thin sheets.

Because it is so strong, duralumin has been used in many famous machines. It was used to build the frames of huge airships like the Hindenburg.

Early planes like the Junkers J.I also used it. Even bicycles used duralumin for parts like pedals and handlebars. In 1946, a designer named Kiro Honjo used leftover wartime metal to make a "cross" bicycle. In 2011, a company even made the first car wheels out of duralumin. It is a metal that helps many things move and fly.
