Base metal

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Base metals are common and inexpensive metals. They are different from precious metals like gold or silver. People use these metals for many big jobs. In the past, coins were made of precious metals. This gave the coins their value. Today, base metals are also used to make coins.

These metals act in a specific way. Many base metals oxidize or corrode quite easily. This means they change when they touch the air. Some of them react with a liquid called hydrochloric acid. This reaction can create a gas called hydrogen. For example, copper is a base metal. It oxidizes easily but does not react with that acid.

Different groups use the term in different ways. In mining, people look for industrial non-ferrous metals. Non-ferrous means they do not contain iron. This group includes copper, lead, nickel, and zinc. These are very important for making things. They are not the rare, precious metals.

One agency has a much longer list. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection uses a big list. They include iron and steel in their group. Their list also has aluminium and tin. It includes tungsten, molybdenum, tantalum, and cobalt. They even list bismuth, cadmium, and titanium. Other metals on their list are zirconium, antimony, and manganese.

Base metals can also hide under other things. This happens in a process called plating. A base metal can sit under a thin layer. For example, copper can sit under silver. This is seen in something called Sheffield plate. The base metal stays underneath the shiny part. This makes the item look very nice.
