Precious metals are rare elements found in nature.

They have a very high economic value. These metals are often called noble metals. This is because they do not rust easily. They are also less reactive than most other elements. Many of them are shiny and can be stretched into thin shapes.

People use them for jewelry, art, and making coins. Gold and silver are the most famous examples. Other precious metals include the platinum group metals. These are ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium, and platinum.

People often buy these metals in large amounts called bullion.

Bullion is valued by its weight and its purity. Purity tells us how much of the metal is actually there. Most mass-produced bullion is 99.9% pure. It is very hard to reach 100% purity. The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf series is very pure. It can reach 99.999% purity. Some countries also make special bullion coins. These coins are legal money, but they are worth much more as metal.

For example, a Canadian Gold Maple Leaf has a face value of $50. However, it contains one troy ounce of gold.

History shows how the value of metals can change.

In the past, many metals were used as currency. Aluminum is a very interesting story. Today, aluminum is a common metal. But in the late 1800s, it was considered precious. It was very hard to take out of rocks. This made it more expensive than gold. Napoleon III even gave aluminum cutlery to his most important guests. In 1884, the top of the Washington Monument used 100 ounces of pure aluminum. Later, new ways to make aluminum caused the price to drop.

Many nations mint huge and amazing coins.

The Australian Gold Nugget coin is one of the largest. It contains one full kilogram of gold. In 2012, the Perth Mint made a 1-tonne gold coin. That coin had a gold value of about $50 million AUD. Austria also made a very large coin in 2004. The Vienna Philharmonic Coin contains 31 kg of gold. In 2007, the Royal Canadian Mint made a 100 kg gold coin. This was done to show how pure their metal could be.

Precious metals do much more than just sit in a vault.

They help our modern world work. Platinum and palladium are used in catalytic converters. These parts help reduce pollution from cars. Gold is used in nanotechnology and solar cells. Scientists even use tiny gold and silver particles in biosensors. Investors also use these metals to protect their money. They often look at the gold-to-silver ratio to see their value. This ratio compares how much silver buys one ounce of gold. It is one of the oldest ways to track prices.
