Platinum is a rare and special metal. It has a silverish-white color and a shiny look.

This metal is very dense and heavy. It is also very easy to shape. Scientists call this being ductile. Platinum is actually more ductile than gold, silver, or copper.

Because it is so hard to find, it is a very valuable precious metal. It is part of a group of elements called the platinum group.

Platinum is famous for being a noble metal. This means it does not corrode or rust easily. It stays stable even when it gets very hot.

Most of the time, platinum is found in nature all by itself. It does not like to combine with other things. However, it can be dissolved by a hot liquid called aqua regia. This liquid is a mix of nitric and hydrochloric acids. Platinum is also very useful in science because it can help speed up chemical changes. This special job is called acting as a catalyst.

People have used platinum for a long time. Native Americans in South America used it to make objects.

European writers knew about it in the 1500s. However, scientists did not fully understand it until much later. In 1748, Antonio de Ulloa published a report about a new metal from Colombia.

Later, a scientist named Gerhard Ertl won a Nobel Prize in 2007. He studied how platinum helps clean up gases in cars. This work helped us understand how catalytic converters work.

Finding platinum is a big job because it is so rare. It is found in very small amounts in the Earth's crust.

Much of the world's platinum comes from South Africa. A geologist named Hans Merensky found a huge supply there in 1924. He found a layer called the Merensky Reef. This one place holds about 75% of the world's known platinum. Other large deposits are found in Russia and Canada.

In 2010, South Africa produced most of the world's platinum.

We use platinum in many parts of our daily lives. It is a key part of catalytic converters in cars.

It is also used to make jewelry and dental tools. Doctors even use platinum compounds like cisplatin to treat certain types of cancer. In factories, it helps people work with molten glass. This is because the hot glass does not stick to the platinum. It is even used in very precise thermometers. Platinum helps us do many important things every day.
