Ruthenium is a rare and hard white metal.

It is part of the platinum group of metals. This group includes metals that do not react easily with most chemicals. Because it is so stable, it is very useful for many jobs. It is a transition metal with the atomic number 44. People find it in very small amounts in the Earth's crust. It is the 78th most common element on our planet.

Finding ruthenium involves a careful process of extraction. It is often found as a small part of platinum ores. Miners find it in places like the Ural Mountains. It is also found in North and South America. Some is found in South Africa and in Sudbury, Ontario.

To get the metal, scientists often process nickel or copper ores. They use a method called electrorefining to collect it. This creates a material called anode mud that holds the metal.

A scientist named Karl Ernst Claus discovered ruthenium in 1844. He worked at Kazan State University. He named the metal after Russia. He used the Latin name for Russia, which is Ruthenia. This is how the element got its special name. Since then, people have learned much more about it. We now know how to use it in many high-tech ways.

Today, ruthenium is used in many important tools. Most of it goes into electrical contacts that resist wear. It is also used in thick-film resistors.

A new use is as a layer for parts in semiconductor lithography. This helps make computer chips. It can also be added to platinum to make it harder. Small amounts of ruthenium can even help titanium resist corrosion.

Ruthenium is also very important in chemistry as a catalyst. A catalyst is something that helps a chemical change happen.

One famous example is Grubbs' catalyst. This tool is used in reactions called alkene metathesis. This process can help create new kinds of plastics.

Scientists also use ruthenium to make many different chemical parts. It is a truly versatile metal for modern science.
