Palladium is a rare and shiny metal. It has a silvery-white color that looks a lot like platinum.

This metal is part of a special group called the platinum group metals. This group includes platinum, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium, and osmium. These metals all act in very similar ways. However, palladium is unique because it has the lowest melting point in the group. It is also the least dense of these metals.

This metal works in a very important way to help our air stay clean. More than half of the world's palladium goes into catalytic converters. These are parts found in automobile exhausts.

Inside the converter, palladium acts as a catalyst. A catalyst is something that helps a change happen faster. It helps turn harmful gases like carbon monoxide into safe things. These safe things include nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor. This process can clean up as much as 90% of the bad gases.

A chemist named William Hyde Wollaston discovered palladium in 1802.

He chose a very special name for it. He named the metal after an asteroid called 2 Pallas. This asteroid was named after the Greek goddess Athena. In Greek stories, Athena earned this name after she slew Pallas. This connection links a tiny piece of metal to ancient legends. It is a wonderful way to name a new discovery.

Finding palladium is a hard job because it is very rare. Most of it comes from huge deposits in the Earth. Some of the biggest places to find it are in South Africa. You can also find it in Russia, Canada, and the United States.

In 2022, the total mine production reached 210,000 kilograms. Russia was the top producer with 88,000 kilograms. A company called Norilsk Nickel produces 39% of the world's supply. Because it is hard to find, people often trade it as a precious metal. They even make palladium coins and bars.

You can find palladium in many things you see every day. It is used to make jewelry and dental tools. It is also found in electronics and medical tools. Some people even use it to make professional flutes.

It is even used in blood sugar test strips. Because it is so useful, it is treated like gold or silver. It even has its own special currency codes. This metal is a small but mighty part of our modern world.
