Group 10 element

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Group 10 is a special family of elements in the periodic table.

This group includes nickel, palladium, platinum, and darmstadtium. These are all called transition metals. Most of them are shiny, silvery-white metals. They are very hard and can be shaped into wires without breaking. This quality is called being ductile. They also have high melting points. This means they stay solid even when things get very hot.

These metals work in many interesting ways. They are often used as catalysts. A catalyst helps a chemical reaction happen more easily. They are also used to make alloys. An alloy is a mix of different metals. Some of these metals are used in electrical parts. This is because their electrical resistance changes in a predictable way when they get warm. Even in medicine, platinum is used. It is part of some drugs used to treat cancer.

People have known about these metals for a very long time. Nickel was used as far back as 3500 BCE. Some ancient people may have used nickel from meteors. This is why some called iron "fire from heaven." A. F. Cronstedt named nickel in 1751. William Hyde Wollaston found palladium in 1803. He named it after the asteroid 2 Pallas. Platinum was seen in Ecuador in 1736. A Spanish officer named Antonio de Ulloa reported it there.

There are many facts to know about how these metals exist. Nickel is the 22nd most common element on Earth. It is found in ores like laterites and sulfides. Indonesia is the biggest producer of nickel in the world. Palladium and platinum are also very important. Platinum is very dense and heavy. Darmstadtium is the most unusual member of the group. It is a synthetic element. This means humans must make it in a lab.

It is fun to see how these metals connect to our world. You might wear jewelry made of platinum or palladium. These metals are used in electroplating to coat other objects. You can also find nickel in strong steel alloys. These alloys were used for military tools in the past. They are also used to resist heat and rust today. Even the stars connect to this story. Some of the very first nickel used on Earth came from space.
