Group 12 element

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

In the periodic table, there is a special family called Group 12. This group contains four chemical elements: zinc, cadmium, mercury, and copernicium.

While some scientists call them transition metals, others disagree because their inner electron shells are already full. Most of these metals are found naturally on Earth. Zinc, cadmium, and mercury are all part of this natural group. They are used in many ways to make electronics and alloys. An alloy is a mixture of different metals.

These metals work in very different ways depending on their structure. Zinc and cadmium are solid metals that often look bluish-white. Zinc is very important for the health of living things. However, cadmium and mercury are highly toxic and can be poisonous. Mercury is the most unusual member of the group. It is a heavy, silvery-white metal that stays liquid at room temperature.

This happens because its electrons are held very tightly by the center of the atom. This makes it hard for mercury atoms to bond strongly with each other.

Scientists have studied these elements for a long time to understand them. Zinc is sometimes called spelter in nonscientific settings. Mercury has been used in many ways throughout history. Because it is a liquid, it can dissolve other metals to form amalgams. For example, mercury can mix with gold, silver, or sodium. People used to use iron flasks to trade mercury. This was because mercury would dissolve many other types of metal containers.

Each element in Group 12 has its own specific numbers and facts. Zinc has an atomic number of 30 and melts at 420 degrees Celsius. Cadmium has an atomic number of 48 and melts at 321 degrees Celsius. Mercury has an atomic number of 80 and has a very low melting point of -39 degrees Celsius.

The last member, copernicium, is a synthetic element. This means it does not occur in nature. Scientists must create it in a laboratory. We do not yet know if copernicium is a liquid or a gas.

You can see how these metals connect to the world around you. Zinc is used to make brass, which is an alloy of zinc and copper. Cadmium is often used as a protective layer on other metals to stop them from rusting. Even the planes you fly in are affected by these science rules. Mercury can form an amalgam with the aluminum in an aircraft. Because this can damage the plane, mercury is usually not allowed on aircraft.
