Group 11 element

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Group 11 is a special family of chemical elements. This group includes copper, silver, gold, and roentgenium.

The first three are often called coinage metals. People used them for a long time to make money. Silver and gold are now mostly used as bullion. Bullion is metal kept for its value rather than for coins. Copper is still very common in modern coins. It is often used in a mix called cupronickel. These metals are very useful in our daily lives. They are also very good at moving electricity.

These metals work well because of how their electrons are set up. In science, we look at the outermost shells of atoms to see how they behave.

All group 11 elements are relatively inert. This means they do not react easily with other things. They are also corrosion-resistant, so they do not rust away quickly. Silver is the best at moving electricity through its body. Copper is also a great conductor, and gold is third in that list. Silver is also the best at moving heat. It is also the best at reflecting light.

Humans have known about these metals since prehistoric times. Copper was used around 4000 BC to make weapons and tools.

Silver mining began around 3000 BC in Turkey and Greece. Ancient people even learned how to refine silver. Gold is even older in the human record. Small amounts of natural gold were found in Spanish caves. These caves were used during the late Paleolithic period, around 40,000 BC. Gold artifacts appeared in Egypt at the end of the fifth millennium BC. Smelting, or melting metal to get it out of rock, began during the 4th millennium BC.

Finding these metals in nature happens in different ways. Copper is found in places like Chile, China, Mexico, Russia, and the USA. One main ore is copper pyrite, which gives 76% of the world's copper. Silver is found in its pure form or mixed with gold in an alloy called electrum.

Scientists made roentgenium in 1994. They did this by bombarding nickel-64 atoms into bismuth-209. This created roentgenium-272. Unlike the others, roentgenium is a synthetic element. This means it is made by people in a lab rather than found in the ground.

These metals connect to many things you see every day. Copper is used for the wires in your home. Gold is used for tiny bond wires in integrated circuits.

Silver is used in photography and even in medicine. Silver and copper both have antimicrobial properties. This means they can help stop the spread of germs. This is why some hospitals use copper for doorknobs. However, too much copper can be toxic to living things. Gold and silver can also build up in the body over a long time. This can cause skin color changes called chrysiasis or argyria.
