Roentgenium is a special type of man-made matter called a synthetic chemical element.

It has the symbol Rg and the atomic number 111. You cannot find this element in nature. Scientists can only create it inside a laboratory. It is extremely radioactive, which means it is very unstable. Because it is so unstable, it breaks apart very quickly.

This makes it a very difficult element to study or use.

Making roentgenium is a very hard job for scientists. They do this by hitting a target with tiny pieces of other elements. In 1994, a team hit a target of bismuth-209 with nickel-64 nuclei. They used a machine to speed up the nickel pieces. This process is called bombardment. When the pieces hit the target, they created new atoms of roentgenium. This way of making new elements is how we learn about the heaviest parts of our world.

An international team of scientists first made roentgenium in December 1994. They worked at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research. This center is located near Darmstadt, Germany. A leader named Sigurd Hofmann led the team during this discovery. They had to repeat their work in 2002 to be sure. In 2003, experts officially decided that the GSI team had discovered it.

They named the element to honor a famous person.

The element is named after Wilhelm Röntgen. He was a physicist who discovered X-rays.

Before it had a permanent name, people called it unununium. They also called it element 111. Scientists use different versions of the element called isotopes. One isotope, roentgenium-282, has a half-life of 130 seconds. Another unconfirmed version, roentgenium-286, might last for 10.7 minutes. These numbers show how quickly the atoms disappear.

We can use what we know about other metals to guess how roentgenium acts. It sits in group 11 on the periodic table. This group includes copper, silver, and gold. Because of this, scientists think roentgenium might be a noble metal. It might even be a very heavy solid. Its density might be around 22 to 24 grams per cubic centimeter. This would make it as heavy as osmium, one of the densest things we know.
