It is a bright, metallic-yellow metal that is very dense and soft. Scientists call it a noble metal because it is one of the least reactive elements. This means it does not change easily when it touches other things. It stays solid under normal conditions on Earth.

Gold is also very malleable and ductile. You can hammer a single gram of gold into a sheet that is very thin. You can even pull it into a wire as thin as a single atom.

It can also be found in alluvial deposits, which are bits left by water. To clean or refine gold, people use specific liquids. Most acids cannot dissolve gold, but a mixture called aqua regia can. This mixture uses nitric acid and hydrochloric acid together. This special liquid turns the gold into a soluble form.

Mining companies also use alkaline solutions of cyanide to dissolve gold. This helps them collect it from the earth.

Humans have used gold for a very long time. People have made coins, jewelry, and art with it throughout history.

For many years, countries used a gold standard for their money. This meant the value of money was tied to gold. Most gold coins stopped being used as regular money in the 1930s. Later, in 1971, the world moved away from the gold standard entirely. Even though it is rare, gold is still very important today. In 2023, China was the largest producer of gold in the world. Russia and Australia were the next biggest producers.

There is a lot of gold hidden in the world. About 201,296 tonnes of gold exist above the ground.

If you put all that gold together, it would form a cube. Each side of that cube would be about 22 centimeters long. Most of the new gold we find goes to different places. About 50 percent is used to make jewelry.

Another 40 percent is used for investments. Only 10 percent is used for industrial jobs.

Gold is useful because it helps technology work well. It is a great conductor, which means electricity moves through it easily. This makes it perfect for connectors inside computers.

It is also used in space suits to block heat. The thin gold sheets reflect infrared light, which is radiant heat. Gold is also used to make colored glass and even medicine. A drug called auranofin uses gold to treat rheumatoid arthritis. It is amazing how one yellow metal can do so much.
