Alkaline earth metal

physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The alkaline earth metals are a special family of six elements.

You can find them in group 2 of the periodic table. This group includes beryllium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium, and radium. These metals are all shiny and silvery-white in color. They are also quite soft and have low melting points. Most of these elements are found naturally in our world.

However, radium is different because it only appears through the decay of uranium and thorium.

These metals work in a very specific way at the atomic level. Every element has electrons orbiting its center in layers called shells. The alkaline earth metals all have exactly two electrons in their outermost shell. To reach a stable state, they readily lose these two electrons. When they lose these electrons, they become positively charged ions. This happens because having a full outer shell is much more stable.

This shared way of working is why they are grouped together.

Scientists have been studying these metals for a long time. Early chemists used terms like "earth" for substances that did not dissolve in water. Antoine Lavoisier was a chemist who realized these earths were actually compounds. In 1789, he wrote about them in his book, "Elements of Chemistry." Later, in 1808, Humphry Davy used a process called electrolysis to find the metals. He used electricity to separate the metals from their molten earths. This discovery helped give the group its official name.

Each metal in this group has its own unique traits. For example, magnesium reacts with water, but it does so very slowly. Heavier metals like barium react much more vigorously with water. You can even see different colors when these metals are put in a flame. Calcium produces a brick-red color in a flame test.

Strontium creates a deep crimson color. Barium can even show an apple-green color during these tests.

These elements are connected to many things you might already know. Calcium is a very important part of the bones in your body. Because of this, some radioactive metals can act like "bone seekers." This means they move into the skeleton just like calcium does. Doctors sometimes use this trait to help treat certain bone cancers with radiotherapy. This allows the treatment to target the cancer directly.

It is amazing how much chemistry affects our own bodies.
