The alkaline earth metals are a group of six elements.

They are beryllium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium, and radium. These metals are shiny and silver. They are also soft.

Most of these metals react with water. This reaction can be very strong. The heavier metals react more quickly than the lighter ones.

These metals have a special way they work. They each have two electrons in their outer shell. To become stable, they like to lose these two electrons. This makes them form positive ions. Most of these metals also react with oxygen. When they do, they make oxides. These oxides are called alkaline earths. They were named this because they act like bases when mixed with water.

Some of these metals change colors in a flame. Calcium makes a brick-red color.

Strontium makes a deep crimson color. Radium is also in this group, but it is radioactive. This means it is not stable like the others. Radium is found through the decay of uranium and thorium.
