Group 8 element

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Group 8 is a family of metals. These metals live in a column on the periodic table. The group has four members. They are iron, ruthenium, osmium, and hassium.

Iron is very common in the Earth. It is the fourth most common element in the crust. Iron helps our bodies stay healthy. It helps move oxygen through our blood. But iron can also rust. This happens when it meets water and oxygen. Rust flakes off and shows more metal.

Ruthenium is a very rare metal. It is used for electrical parts. It helps make those parts last longer. Some ruthenium molecules might even fight cancer.

Osmium is a very hard metal. It is also brittle, which means it can break easily. It is hard to shape because it has a very high melting point. It stays shiny even when it is hot.

Hassium is a man-made metal. It is not found in nature. It is made by hitting lead atoms with iron atoms. Hassium is also radioactive. This means it breaks down very quickly. Scientists have not learned much about it yet.
