physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Four metals belong to Group 10. These are nickel, palladium, platinum, and darmstadtium. Most are shiny, silver-colored metals. They are very hard and can be shaped easily. They also have high melting points. This means they stay solid even when it is very hot.

Nickel is found in nature in rocks called ores. It is the 22nd most common element on Earth. Indonesia makes the most nickel in the world. People have used nickel for a long time. Some used it for tools and coins. Some even used metal from space!

Palladium was found by William Hyde Wollaston in 1803. He named it after an asteroid called Pallas. Platinum was also found in gold mines in Ecuador. People used it to make rings. Today, we use these metals for many things. They make jewelry and electrical parts. They also help in chemical changes. Some platinum is even used in medicine to fight cancer. Darmstadtium is different. It is a synthetic element. This means people make it in labs. It does not occur in nature. It is also radioactive. This means it breaks down quickly.
