Rutherfordium is a man-made element. You cannot find it in nature. Scientists must make it in a lab. They use a machine called a particle accelerator.

This element is radioactive. This means it is unstable and breaks apart. Most parts of it do not last long. Some parts last for only a tiny fraction of a second. The most stable part we know lasts for about 48 minutes.

There was a big fight over its name. Scientists in the Soviet Union and the USA both found it. The Soviet team wanted to name it after Igor Kurchatov.

The Americans wanted to honor Ernest Rutherford. He was a famous physicist. In 1997, the name rutherfordium became official.

We know how rutherfordium acts in chemistry. It acts like an element called hafnium. It can form a solid called an oxide. It can also make a gas called a chloride. These parts help us understand this heavy element.
