Lawrencium is a special metal made in labs.

It is a synthetic element. This means people must make it. They do this in particle accelerators. These machines hit light elements with charged particles. This way, they create new, heavy atoms.

This metal is named after Ernest Lawrence. He invented the cyclotron. A cyclotron is a tool used to find new elements.

Lawrencium is the last member of the actinide series. An actinide is a group of heavy elements.

Scientists in the United States and the Soviet Union both worked to find it. They had a long debate about who found it first. In 1992, experts gave credit to both teams.

Lawrencium is radioactive. This means it is unstable. It breaks down over time. Some parts last for 11 hours. Other parts only last for 2.7 minutes. Scientists think it is a silvery metal. It would be very heavy in real life.

It also acts like a metal called lutetium.
