This metal is hard to find. It is often found inside a rock called monazite. Scientists find it as a tiny part of other elements. It is much more common than silver. Still, it is very rare and expensive. One kilogram costs about $10,000. That is one-fourth the price of gold.

Three scientists found it in 1907. They were Georges Urbain, Baron Carl Auer von Welsbach, and Charles James. They all found it inside a metal called ytterbium. Urbain gave it its name. He named it after Lutetia. That is the Latin name for Paris.

Lutetium has many uses. One kind is called an isotope. Lutetium-176 is a special isotope. It helps scientists find the age of rocks and meteorites. This happens because it changes over a very long time. Doctors also use it to treat certain tumors. This is called radionuclide therapy. It is a way to treat sickness with tiny bits of power.
