Dubnium is highly radioactive. This means it gives off power and breaks down quickly. The most stable version is dubnium-268. It has a half-life of about 16 hours. A half-life is the time it takes for half of a sample to decay. Because it goes away so fast, it is hard to study.

Two teams found it. One team was at the JINR in Russia. The other team was at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory in the USA. They had a long fight over who found it first. They even suggested different names. In 1993, a special group looked at the facts. They decided both teams should share the credit. In 1997, the element was named dubnium. It was named after the Russian town of Dubna.
