Group 5 element

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Some metals belong to a special group. This is called Group 5.

FerroVanadium
FerroVanadium

It has four metals: vanadium, niobium, tantalum, and dubnium. These are all transition metals. This means they are hard and strong. They can also stay strong when they are very hot.

Vanadium was found in 1801. A man named Andrés Manuel del Río found it in Mexico.

He named it after a goddess. This is because its salts make many beautiful colors.

Niobium and tantalum are very similar. Charles Hatchett found niobium in 1801.

Anders Gustav Ekeberg found tantalum in 1802.

For a long time, people thought they were the same. They are hard to tell apart because they act so much alike.

The last metal is dubnium. It is not found in nature. Scientists must make it in a lab. It is very unstable. This means it does not stay around for very long.
