physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The periodic table is a chart of chemical elements. It has rows that show how elements behave. The fifth row is called period 5. It contains 18 different elements. These elements start with rubidium and end with xenon.

Some elements in this row are very special. Rubidium is a very reactive metal. It can change color in the air. Strontium is also in this row. It is a soft metal. If it touches water, it reacts very strongly.

Many elements here are used to make things. Rhodium is a shiny metal used in jewelry. Niobium is a soft, grey metal. It helps make steel much stronger. People use it in jet engines and rockets.

Yttrium is used to make red colors for screens. Zirconium is found in zircon crystals. These are some of the oldest minerals on Earth. Technetium is a unique element. It is radioactive, which means it gives off power. Most technetium is made by people in labs.
