It belongs to a group called alkali metals. This group includes metals like potassium. Rubidium is denser than water, so it sinks.

This metal is very reactive. If it touches water, it reacts violently. This reaction can cause an explosion. It can even catch fire in the air.

Two scientists found rubidium in 1861. Their names were Robert Bunsen and Gustav Kirchhoff. They used a tool called a spectroscope. This tool looks at light. They saw bright red lines in the light. They named the metal after the Latin word for deep red.

Rubidium is found in the Earth's crust. It is often found in a mineral called lepidolite. It is also found in seawater. Most rubidium is stable. However, a small part is radioactive. This part has a very long half-life. A half-life is the time it takes for half of a substance to decay. This specific part lasts longer than the age of the universe!
