When it touches the air, it turns a bluish-gray color. This is called tarnishing. This happens because a layer of oxide builds up on the metal.

Two men found thallium in 1861. Their names were William Crookes and Claude-Auguste Lamy. They worked on it at the same time. They used a way to study light called flame spectroscopy. This method lets scientists see colors in a flame. Thallium makes a bright green line in the light. Because of this, the name thallium means "green shoot" in Greek.

Thallium is not found alone in nature. It is often found in rocks with potassium. Most thallium comes from refining other heavy metals. About 65% of it goes to the electronics industry. The rest is used to make glass and medicine.

Some thallium is used in heart scans. This helps doctors look at the heart. However, thallium is very toxic. It can be very dangerous to living things. Because of this, many countries have banned its use as a poison.
