It is one of the softest elements. You can cut it with a knife. It can even leave a mark on paper like a pencil.

When you bend indium, it makes a high-pitched crackling sound.

Two scientists found indium in 1863. Their names were Ferdinand Reich and Hieronymus Theodor Richter. They were studying minerals from a mine. They saw a bright blue line in a light test. They named the metal indium after the color indigo. This name comes from a Latin word for violet.

Indium is very useful for technology. It is used to make flat-panel displays. Scientists make a clear coating called indium tin oxide. This coating goes on glass. It helps the glass carry electricity. Indium also helps make blue and white LED circuits. These are small lights used in many devices.

We do not find much indium in the Earth's crust. It is mostly made in stars. This happens through a set of steps called the s-process.

In this way, atoms capture neutrons to change into indium. We find indium mostly as a by-product of mining other metals like zinc.
