A chemist named Paul-Émile Lecoq de Boisbaudran found it in 1875. It is not found alone in nature. Instead, it is found in small amounts in rocks like bauxite.

One of the coolest things about gallium is how it melts. Its melting point is about 29.76 degrees Celsius. This is just above room temperature. It will even melt if you hold it in your hand!

When it turns from a liquid to a solid, it expands. This means it gets bigger. You must be careful when storing it in containers.

Gallium helps make many things we use every day. It is used to make semiconductors. These are parts used in electronics. Gallium helps make blue and violet lights. These are called LEDs.

It is also used to make alloys. An alloy is a mix of different metals. One mix is called galinstan. It stays liquid at very low temperatures. This makes it a safe choice for thermometers. It is not toxic like mercury.
