Rubidium

Rubidium is a very soft, silvery-white metal.

It belongs to a group called alkali metals. This group includes metals like potassium and caesium. Rubidium is unique because it is the first alkali metal that is denser than water.

This means it will sink if you drop it into a liquid. Rubidium is also very reactive with its surroundings. It can even ignite spontaneously when it is in the air. Because it is so reactive, it is used in many special scientific ways.

When rubidium touches water, a very intense thing happens. It reacts explosively with the water to create rubidium hydroxide and hydrogen gas. This reaction is often so strong that it ignites the metal or the gas.

The speed of this reaction depends on the surface area of the metal. Small droplets of the metal can cause an explosion. Rubidium is also photosensitive, which means it is sensitive to light. It can be easily turned into a vapor for scientific experiments. This makes it a great target for using lasers to move atoms around.

Two famous chemists discovered this element in 1861.

Their names were Robert Bunsen and Gustav Kirchhoff. They worked in Heidelberg, Germany, using a new tool called flame spectroscopy. This tool lets scientists look at the light given off by a flame. They saw bright red lines in the light from the metal. Because of this, they named it after the Latin word for deep red. They even found it inside a mineral called lepidolite.

Natural rubidium is made of two different types called isotopes. Most of it, about 72.2%, is a stable isotope called Rb-85. The other 27.8% is a radioactive isotope called Rb-87. This radioactive part has a half-life of 48.8 billion years. That is more than three times as long as the age of the universe!

Scientists use this long life to date rocks. They measure how much rubidium has turned into strontium over time. This helps them learn how old certain minerals really are.

Rubidium is not a nutrient that living things need to stay healthy. However, animal cells treat rubidium ions in a way very similar to potassium.

This happens because the ions have the same charge and similar properties. In labs, scientists use rubidium chloride to help living cells take up DNA. Rubidium is also used to make very precise atomic clocks. These clocks help keep time with incredible accuracy. It is amazing how one soft metal can do so much.
