Lithium is a very special chemical element. It has the symbol Li and an atomic number of 3.

This metal is soft and silvery-white in color. It is actually the least dense metal in the world. This means it is very light for its size. In fact, it is so light it can float on water!

It is also one of only three metals that can do this. Because it is so light, it is a very interesting material to study.

Lithium is highly reactive, which means it changes easily when it touches other things. It is also flammable and can catch fire. Because of this, it must be stored carefully. People keep it in a vacuum or under special liquids like mineral oil.

When it touches the air, it quickly turns from silvery to a dull gray or black. It does not stay pure for long in our atmosphere. This reactivity happens because it has a single electron that is easily released. This makes it a great conductor of heat and electricity.

Scientists have studied lithium for a long time. Johan August Arfwedson is credited with discovering it in 1817.

In 1932, humans made the first fully human-made nuclear reaction. This happened when scientists changed lithium atoms into helium.

Lithium is also used in nuclear physics today. It can serve as a fuel for certain types of powerful weapons. It is a very important part of how we understand atoms.

There are many places where we find lithium. It is found in rocks called pegmatites. It is also found in ocean water and salty brines.

Australia produces the most lithium every year. In the universe, lithium is actually quite rare. It was made very early during the Big Bang.

It is less common in the Solar System than many other light elements.

You probably use lithium every single day without knowing it. Most of the lithium we make goes into batteries.

These lithium-ion batteries power many of our favorite gadgets. Lithium is also used to make heat-resistant glass and ceramics. It can even be used in medicine to help people with certain mental illnesses. From the phone in your hand to the stars in the sky, lithium is everywhere.
