Potassium is a silvery white metal that is very important to our world.

It is a soft metal that you can easily cut with a knife. This metal is very reactive, which means it changes quickly when it touches other things. If you leave it out, it reacts with oxygen in the air in just seconds. This creates flaky white pieces called potassium peroxide.

When potassium touches water, it reacts very strongly. The reaction creates enough heat to ignite hydrogen gas. This causes the metal to burn with a beautiful lilac-colored flame.

In nature, you will not find pure potassium metal just sitting around. Instead, it is always found in ionic salts. These are substances made when potassium atoms join with other elements. You can find potassium dissolved in seawater, which is 0.04% potassium by weight. It is also found in many minerals like orthoclase.

This mineral is a common part of granite and other igneous rocks. Potassium is also an alkali metal. This means it has one single electron in its outer shell. This electron is very easy to remove, which helps the metal react so quickly.

People have been studying potassium for a long time. The name comes from potash, which is the ash left from burnt plants. In 1797, a German chemist named Martin Klaproth found potash in minerals. He realized it was a real element and called it kali. Later, in 1807, Humphry Davy used a process called electrolysis to isolate the metal.

Electrolysis uses electricity to separate elements from their salts. Davy used a tool called a voltaic pile to do this. This was the first time a metal was ever isolated using electricity.

There are many interesting facts about how we use and find potassium. About 95% of all potassium made by humans is used for agricultural fertilizers.

Farmers use these fertilizers to help crops grow in the soil. Industry also uses potassium to make things like saltwater soap. Potassium salts often dissolve very well in water. This is because they have high water solubility. Some salts, like potassium chloride, are very common. Other types, like potassium nitrate, are used in many different ways.

Potassium is also a vital part of being alive. Potassium ions are needed for all living cells to work properly. They help nerve cells send messages through your body. They also help your heart keep a normal rhythm.

You can get the potassium you need from eating fresh fruits and vegetables. Your body is very smart about how it handles it. If you eat a lot of potassium, your kidneys help get rid of the extra. Your liver and muscles can also hold onto it to keep your levels steady.
