Magnesium

physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Magnesium is a shiny, gray metal that is very useful. It is a lightweight metal with a low density. In fact, it is only two-thirds the density of aluminium.

This metal is also very reactive, which means it likes to change when it touches other things. When magnesium is exposed to air, it forms a thin layer of magnesium oxide. This layer acts like a protective coating to stop further corrosion. If you burn the pure metal, it creates a brilliant-white light.

This light is very bright and intense.

There are many ways that magnesium works in our world. It can react with water to create hydrogen gas. When magnesium is in a fine powder, this reaction happens much faster.

It also reacts with most acids to produce magnesium chloride and hydrogen gas. Scientists can even use this reaction with water to store energy. This could help run a special type of magnesium-based engine. Magnesium is also used to make strong alloys. By mixing it with small amounts of other metals, like aluminium, it becomes much less brittle.

People have found many ways to produce this metal. One common way is through electrolysis, which uses electricity on magnesium salts from brine. Another way is the Pidgeon process. In this method, magnesium oxide is heated with silicon at very high temperatures.

This process creates a gaseous magnesium that is then collected. The Pidgeon process is very popular because it can make high-purity magnesium. In the past, the United States was the main supplier of this metal. However, China now produces most of the world's magnesium.

Magnesium is found in many places across the universe. It is the eighth most common element in the Earth's crust. It is also the fourth most common element in the whole Earth.

In the vastness of space, large aging stars produce magnesium. They do this by adding helium nuclei to a carbon nucleus. When these massive stars explode as supernovas, they spray magnesium into space. This material can then be recycled into new star systems. This cycle helps build the planets and stars we see today.

This metal is also very important for life on Earth. It is the eleventh most abundant element in the human body. Magnesium is essential to every single cell in your body. It also helps hundreds of enzymes, which are tiny workers in your cells, to function.

You can find magnesium in foods like bran muffins. It is also used in medicine to help with stomach issues. For example, milk of magnesia is a common antacid. This shows how a simple metal can be vital for both stars and people.
