Sodium is a fascinating chemical element. It is a soft, silvery-white metal.

You can actually cut it easily with a knife. It is highly reactive, meaning it changes quickly when it touches other things. Because of this, scientists must store bulk sodium in oil or an inert gas. This keeps it from reacting with the air. Sodium is also a great conductor of heat and electricity.

This element works in many ways in our world. In nature, you will not find pure sodium metal sitting alone. Instead, it is found in minerals like halite or feldspars. When sodium and chlorine join together, they create sodium chloride. This is the common salt we use for food.

Water can also wash sodium out of minerals over a very long time. This process makes sodium and chlorine the most common dissolved elements in our oceans.

History shows us how important sodium has always been. In medieval Europe, people used sodium compounds to help with headaches. The name sodium might come from the Arabic word "suda," which means headache. A scientist named Humphry Davy first isolated the pure metal in 1807. He used a process called electrolysis to do this. This method uses electricity to break down sodium hydroxide.

Sodium is very important for living things. All animals and some plants need it to stay healthy. Inside your body, sodium ions help manage pressure in your fluids. Your cells use a special tool called a sodium–potassium pump. This is an enzyme complex found in the cell membrane.

It pumps sodium ions out of the cell. This keeps the concentration of sodium higher outside the cell than inside. In your nerve cells, sodium helps send important signals through a process called an action potential.

There are many different ways to see sodium in action. If you perform a flame test, sodium will glow with a bright yellow color.

This happens because electrons in the atom move between different energy levels. Sodium is also used to make many useful things. It is used to make soap, glass, and paper. Even the salt used to melt ice on roads comes from sodium compounds.
