Many animals and humans need sodium to stay healthy. It helps our bodies work. Inside our cells, there is a special tool. It is called a sodium–potassium pump. This pump moves sodium ions in and out of cells. This helps our nerve cells send signals.

In the past, people used sodium compounds to treat headaches. The name sodium may come from an Arabic word for headache. A scientist named Humphry Davy first found pure sodium in 1807. He did this using a method called electrolysis. This uses electricity to break things apart.
