Zinc

physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Zinc is a fascinating chemical element with the symbol Zn. It is the 30th element on the periodic table. In its natural state, zinc looks like a shiny, bluish-white metal.

However, it can be quite brittle at room temperature. This means it might break if you hit it too hard. If you remove the oxidation from its surface, the shine returns. Zinc is the 24th most common element found in the Earth's crust. It exists there at an average concentration of 70 grams per ton.

Finding and cleaning zinc is a very specific process. Most zinc comes from a mineral called sphalerite, which is a zinc sulfide. To get the metal, workers use a method called froth flotation on the ore. Next, they use a process called roasting to prepare it. Finally, they use electricity to extract the metal through a step called electrowinning.

This metal is often used to protect other things. For example, hot-dip galvanization coats iron with zinc to stop it from rusting.

This makes the iron much stronger against the weather.

Humans have been using zinc for thousands of years. People used brass, a mix of copper and zinc, as early as the third millennium BC. This was seen in the Aegean area and parts of Iraq and Georgia.

While Romans and Greeks knew about it, large-scale production did not happen until the 12th century in India. The oldest pure zinc was found in Zawar, Rajasthan, from the 9th century AD. This was made using a special distillation process.

Later, a German chemist named Andreas Sigismund Marggraf discovered pure metallic zinc in 1746.

Zinc is vital for almost all living things on Earth. It is an essential trace element for humans, animals, and even plants. In humans, it is the second most abundant trace metal after iron. It helps many enzymes, which are tiny workers in your cells, do their jobs.

Without enough zinc, about two billion people in the developing world may face health problems. In children, a lack of zinc can cause slow growth or trouble fighting infections. However, having too much zinc can also cause health issues like lethargy.

We can find zinc in many different objects around us. It is a main ingredient in brass, which is an alloy of copper and zinc. Zinc is also used in electrical batteries and even in some shampoos. For instance, zinc pyrithione is used in anti-dandruff products.

You might even see it in luminescent paints. In the ocean, zinc is important for the growth of coral. It also helps tiny algae stay healthy in polar regions.

This helps keep the whole ocean food chain working well.
