It looks a lot like iron. However, it is very brittle, which means it breaks easily. This metal is a transition metal with the symbol Mn. Its atomic number is 25. It is often found in minerals alongside iron.

Manganese is very important for many different industries today. It is used to make stainless steel much better. Adding it improves the strength of the steel. It also helps the metal resist wear and stay workable.

There are many ways manganese works in science. One form is called manganese oxide. This is used as an oxidising agent. It is also used to make glass, ceramics, and fertilizers.

Another form is manganese sulfate, which works as a fungicide. In laboratories, people use a deep violet salt called potassium permanganate. This salt is a powerful oxidizer. It is even used to treat diseases in fish.

Even plants use a special manganese cluster to produce oxygen. This part is called the oxygen-evolving complex.

The history of manganese is very old and interesting. Long ago, people used a dark mineral called manganese dioxide. They used it as a pigment for cave paintings.

Egyptian and Roman glassmakers also used manganese to change glass colors. In the 16th century, glassmakers called it manganesum. This name eventually became the word manganese. The metal was first isolated in the 1770s. Many people believe the Swedish chemist Johan Gottlieb Gahn was the first to isolate it.

Scientists have found many specific facts about this element. Naturally occurring manganese is made of one stable isotope called 55Mn. There are also other isotopes like 53Mn and 54Mn. These have different half-lives, which is how long they take to decay.

Manganese is also part of the iron group of elements. Scientists think these elements are made in huge stars. This happens just before a supernova explosion.

These stars create the materials that eventually make up our world.

Manganese is also a very important part of your body. It is an essential element for human health. It helps with bone formation and metabolism.

Most of the manganese in your body is found in your bones. It is also found in your liver, kidneys, and brain. In the brain, it binds to special proteins. One important protein is called glutamine synthetase. This protein lives in cells called astrocytes. Without manganese, our bodies could not work the way they should.
