It is one of the few native metals, which means it can be found in a pure form in nature. This metal has a unique pinkish-orange color when it is fresh.

It is also very soft and easy to bend or shape. This quality is called ductility. Copper is also great at moving heat and electricity. In fact, it is the second best metal at moving heat, right after silver.

There are many ways to get copper from the ground. Most copper comes from sulfide ores found in large open pit mines.

One way to get it is through a thing called flash smelting. First, the ore is crushed into tiny pieces. Then, the ore is heated with oxygen to create cuprous oxide. This oxide reacts with more sulfide to make blister copper. This crude copper is about 98% pure. To make it even better, scientists use electrolysis to reach 99.99% purity.

Humans have been using copper for at least 10,000 years.

It was the first metal ever cast into a shape using a mold. It was also the first metal to be mixed with another metal on purpose. By mixing copper with tin, people created a strong metal called bronze. In the past, people used copper to make blue pigments for art.

The name of the metal comes from the Latin words for "metal of Cyprus." This is why its symbol is Cu.

Copper is found in many places around the world. Chile is the largest producer of copper on Earth.

It supplies 70% of the refined copper and alloys that the United States imports. In the United States, large mines are found in Utah and New Mexico. A very large piece of pure copper was found in 1857 in Michigan. It weighed 420 tonnes!

Copper is also very important for our bodies. Adult humans carry between 1.4 and 2.1 mg of copper for every kilogram of body weight.

You can see copper working in many things you know. It is used in the wiring of your house to move electricity. It is also used in many coins and jewelry.

If you see an old building with a green roof, that is copper too. The green color is called verdigris, which forms when copper reacts with the air.

Even electric cars use a lot of copper. While a normal car might use about 20 to 30 kg, an electric vehicle uses around 91 kg. This helps the car use electricity to move.
