Without it, many technologies would not work the same way.

There are many ways that cobalt works in science. One way is by adding color to things. Cobalt compounds like cobalt blue give a deep blue tint to glass and ceramics.

You can also find this blue color in paints and inks. Another way it works is in batteries. Cobalt is a key part of lithium-ion batteries. It is also used to make alloys that are very strong. These metal mixtures can resist wear and tear very well.

Cobalt even helps clean oil by acting as a catalyst.

History tells us that people have used cobalt for a long time. People used cobalt blue pigments for jewelry and paints in antiquity.

Long ago, German silver miners had a hard time with it. They called the ore "kobold ore." This name comes from the German word for a goblin or spirit. Miners thought these spirits were responsible for the ore. The ore was difficult because it released poisonous fumes when heated. In 1735, scientists found that these ores could be turned into a new metal.

Today, most cobalt comes from mining other metals. It is often a by-product of mining copper and nickel.

A huge amount of the world's cobalt comes from the Copperbelt. This area is in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia. In 2024, global production was more than 300,000 tons. The Democratic Republic of the Congo produced more than 80% of that amount.

This shows how much the world relies on certain places for this metal.

Cobalt is also a part of life itself. It is the active center of something called cobalamins. The most famous example is Vitamin B12.

This is an essential vitamin for all animals to stay healthy. Cobalt is also a tiny nutrient for things like bacteria and algae. It is amazing that a hard metal can be so important for living things. From tiny bacteria to big machines, cobalt plays a huge role everywhere.
