Samarium is a unique chemical element. It is a silvery metal that is moderately hard.

You might notice it looks dull if it sits in the air for a long time. This happens because it slowly oxidizes, which means it reacts with the oxygen around it. Samarium belongs to a group of elements called lanthanides. It has the symbol Sm and the atomic number 62. It is quite rare in the Earth's crust.

This metal works in many different ways. Some samarium is used to make very strong magnets. These are called samarium-cobalt magnets. They are almost as strong as neodymium magnets. However, they have a special talent for handling heat. They can stay magnetic even at temperatures above 100 °C. This makes them very useful in hot environments.

Samarium also helps in science labs. It can act as a reducing agent, which helps move electrons during chemical reactions. It can even be used to help make X-ray lasers.

A chemist named Paul-Émile Lecoq de Boisbaudran discovered samarium in 1879.

He named the element after a mineral called samarskite. This mineral was named after a Russian official named Vassili Samarsky-Bykhovets. He was actually the first person to have an element named after him. The name was indirect, but it still honored him. This discovery helped scientists understand the lanthanide series much better.

We find samarium in several different minerals. It can be found in cerite, gadolinite, and monazite. Two common sources are monazite and bastnäsite. These minerals can contain up to 2.8% samarium. Most of these are mined in China, the United States, Brazil, India, Sri Lanka, and Australia. China is the world leader in mining and producing it.

This makes China a very important place for this metal.

Samarium also plays a role in medicine and power. A special version called samarium-153 is used in medicine. It is part of a drug that helps kill cancer cells. It can treat cancer in the lungs, prostate, and breasts.

In nuclear reactors, samarium-149 is used as a neutron absorber. This means it soaks up tiny particles to help control the reactor. This helps keep the power plant running safely and smoothly.
