An element is a basic part of matter. A period is a single row in the table. All elements in one row have the same number of electron shells. These shells are the paths where electrons live.

As you move across a row, each element has one more proton. A proton is a tiny part inside the center of an atom. Moving across also makes elements less metallic. There are seven complete periods in the table. This includes all 118 known elements.

Period 1 is very small. It only has two elements: hydrogen and helium. Hydrogen is the most common element in the universe. It makes up about 75% of the universe's mass. Helium is the second-most abundant element. Most helium was made during the Big Bang.

Period 2 has many vital elements. Carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen are all here. These are essential for life. Period 4 includes transition metals. These are metals like iron, cobalt, and copper. Period 7 elements are all radioactive. This means they are unstable. Scientists have not made any elements for period 8 yet.
