It is a solid at room temperature. This metal is very tough. It does not rust or break down easily. This is called being corrosion-resistant. It stays safe in salt water and acid.

Most zirconium comes from a mineral called zircon.

We find zircon in many places. Australia and South Africa produce about half of the world's supply. We also get zirconium while mining for tin and titanium.

Zirconium is very good at handling heat. This makes it great for space vehicles. It is also used for turbine blades. In nuclear reactors, it is used to cover fuel rods. This works because it does not soak up neutrons. A neutron is a tiny particle found in atoms.

This metal has many other uses too. It can be used in dental implants for teeth. It helps in water purification systems to clean water. Some types of zirconium are used in flashbulbs. However, be careful with zirconium powder. In powder form, it can catch fire very easily.
