Zirconium is a shiny, greyish-white metal.

It is a solid at room temperature. This metal is very tough and strong. It is also ductile and malleable. These words mean it can be shaped or stretched. One of its best features is being corrosion-resistant. This means it does not break down easily. It stays safe in salt water and acid.

Most zirconium comes from a mineral called zircon.

The name comes from the Persian word zargun. This means "as gold" or "gold-like." We also find it in minerals like baddeleyite and eudialyte. Much of it is a byproduct of mining tin and titanium. Australia and South Africa produce about half of the world's supply. There are over 60 million tonnes of zircon in the world.

People first identified this element in 1789. A scientist named Klaproth studied a mineral from Ceylon. He named the new element Zirkonerde. Later, in 1808, Humphry Davy tried to isolate it. He used a process called electrolysis but he failed. In 1824, Berzelius finally got an impure form of the metal. He heated a mixture in an iron tube. By 1925, people were making zirconium at a large scale.

Zirconium is very useful in many high-tech jobs.

It is used to cover nuclear fuel rods. This works because it has low neutron absorption. This means it does not soak up tiny particles called neutrons. It is also used in space vehicles and turbine blades. These parts must handle very high heat. Zirconium has a melting point of 1855 °C.

We use zirconium in many everyday things too. It is used for dental implants and prosthetics. It is also found in water purification systems. Some zirconium is used in deodorant and flashbulbs. You can even find it in certain ceramics. These ceramics can even act as a substitute for diamonds. However, you must be careful with zirconium powder. In that form, it is highly flammable and can catch fire.
