Niobium is a light grey metal.

It is a transition metal. This means it has special ways of holding electrons. It is also very strong. This metal helps make steel much tougher.

Small amounts of it help steel work well in gas pipelines. Niobium is also used in jet and rocket engines. It stays stable even when it gets very hot.

Scientists use niobium in special machines. It can be a superconductor. This is a material that lets power flow with no loss.

Because of this, it helps make the magnets in MRI scanners. These machines help doctors see inside the body.

Finding niobium was a long puzzle. A man named Charles Hatchett found it in 1801. He called it columbium. For a long time, people thought it was the same as tantalum. These two metals are very similar. In 1949, the name niobium was officially chosen.
