It is a transition metal. This means it belongs to a specific group of metals. It is also very malleable. This means it can be shaped without breaking.

Vanadium was found in Mexico in 1801. A scientist named Andrés Manuel del Río found it. He saw many colors in its salts. Later, Nils Gabriel Sefström named it vanadium. He named it after Vanadís. This is a goddess of beauty.

The name fits because its compounds have many colors.

We find vanadium in many minerals. It is also in fossil fuels. People get it from steel waste or uranium mining.

It is used to make special steel alloys. These alloys are very strong. For example, the Ford Model T used vanadium steel.

This helped make the car lighter and stronger.

Vanadium is also used in batteries. These batteries can store power. Some ocean life uses vanadium too. It helps certain enzymes work in algae.
